On 11–12 December 2025, the ACHILLES consortium gathered in Lisbon at Instituto Superior Técnico for two intensive days of collaboration, strategic discussions, and forward-looking planning focused on the future of trustworthy AI systems in Europe.
Bringing together project partners from across the consortium, the meeting marked an important moment to align technical development, compliance priorities, and real-world implementation strategies as ACHILLES continues to strengthen its approach to ethical and human-centric AI.
Hosted by INESC-ID, the event combined technical workshops, roadmap discussions, compliance deep dives, and collaborative sessions designed to accelerate the project’s progress and reinforce cross-partner cooperation.
Exploring Value, Compliance, and Real-World AI Challenges
The first day focused on the exploration of ACHILLES use cases and ongoing work package activities, enabling partners to assess progress, exchange perspectives, and identify opportunities for stronger integration across technical and operational domains.
Particular attention was given to:
- the evolution of the ACHILLES IDE and its roadmap,
- toolkit integration and IDE-readiness,
- stakeholder engagement,
- and the practical challenges involved in deploying trustworthy AI solutions in complex environments.
The consortium also welcomed valuable exchanges during the European Commission Q&A session, alongside updates on financial and administrative coordination.
Advancing Trustworthy AI in Practice
Day two concentrated on one of the project’s central pillars: trustworthy and compliant AI.
Dedicated sessions addressed:
- AI compliance challenges,
- implications of the AI Act and broader European regulatory developments,
- stakeholder collaboration initiatives,
- and operational approaches to Trustworthy AI assessment.
A key highlight was the deep dive into the Z-Inspection® process, offering partners a practical framework for evaluating ethical, trustworthy, and socially responsible AI systems.
The discussions demonstrated ACHILLES’ commitment not only to technical innovation, but also to ensuring that AI solutions remain transparent, accountable, and aligned with European values.
Collaboration Beyond the Agenda
Beyond the formal sessions, the meeting reinforced one of the project’s strongest assets: its collaborative spirit.
The networking moments, workshops, and informal exchanges created space for open and constructive dialogue across disciplines and organisations — an essential ingredient for tackling the complexity of trustworthy AI at scale.
The consortium extends its sincere thanks to:
- INESC-ID for hosting the meeting,
- Ricardo Melo and team for facilitating the use-case workshops,
- Julie Mannekens for guiding discussions on privacy, compliance, and the evolving regulatory landscape,
- Magnus Westerlund for the insightful session on the Z-Inspection® methodology,
- and the Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS team, led by André V. Carreiro, for their continued coordination and leadership of the ACHILLES project.
As ACHILLES moves into its next phase, the consortium remains committed to building AI systems that are not only technically robust, but also ethically grounded, trustworthy, and ready to support Europe’s digital future.
